After pulling over a driver for suspected DUI, West Virginia State Troopers found a baby in the back seat, covered in vomit and poop. They suspected the baby had been ill for some time. After arresting the mother, they took the baby back to the barracks and gave him a bath, and the unnamed baby seemed to enjoy the TLC offered by the troopers. Child protective services took the baby a few hours later, and he is now with a legal guardian and, hopefully, in a better situation.

Glad to see the little munchkin will be fine.

also glad the trooper didn’t mistake the garbage disposal switch for the light switch over the sink...would not have ended as well

Oh man, that is so sad. Beautiful that the troopers were ready and able to step in for the youngun.

Despite being in one of the poorest and drug riddled states in America, this is a story that shows the good here in WV. Many of us are like the woman arrested, MOST of us are like the troopers. We love each other and will do anything for those that need it weather we can afford it or not and weather they deserve it or not. That’s why despite the hardship, I choose to be here. That and the sheer beauty of the mountains.

People often post these sorts of stories as “faith in humanity restored,” but I have never lost faith in humanity. Though I have lost faith in a few humans. Things like this happen everywhere in the world, every day. Unfortunately, we rarely ever hear of them. We hear of the wars, the riots, the murders, because that’s what sells newspapers.

Though I have lived in a lot of places, I call VA home. I lived for a long time in Norfolk, went to school in Harrisonburg, and hiked the AT a number of times with my father. I’m in Texas now, but damn, do I miss those old mountains. We drove from TX to VA a few times when my mother in law was ill before she died, and I always made sure we drove through the mountains, even if it was out of the way. That stretch of I-64 west from Lexington is probably one of the most beautiful highways in the US.

I think somewhere there is a black bear crying next to a rhododendron bush. It would look something like this

So good to see a smile on his face after what he’s been through. At least he’s young enough to not remember it and hopefully he’ll never be faced with such neglect in his life again.

One thought that came into my mind: as happy as the photo is, considering the circumstances, is it okay to publish a picture of this child’s face? If someone recognizes him, the community will know what his mother did to him. I have no problem with her getting more shame and punishment (and I guess it will be public record anyway as she’ll be charged with a crime), but it’s sad to think that this kid might have to suffer bullying later in life from other kids who might learn of what he went through. Hopefully he has an aunt or uncle or grandparents in another community where no one will learn of this and he can grow up without this “stain” on him. I honestly think it would be better if he never, ever learned of it...

Kids are remarkably resilient. It’s usually only adults who hold grudges. Also, that kid looks like Swee’Pea. I imagine there might be some close family members who might recognize him, and they already know the story. But I doubt anybody else would.

In a sad way, we can almost be glad this happened to him, to get him out of that home. I also believe in the possibility of redemption even for the worst among us, and hope this is the event that makes his mom get clean for good so that one day they can come back together under much better circumstances.
